According to the Challengers Association, the Qualifying Races will be held in Auckland, New Zealand. The winner of the Qualifying series must take on the title holder, Team New Zealand, in the America's Cup 2000 Race.
Syd Fisher, the leader of the Australian Challengers (Cruising Yacht Club of Australia), had proposed transferring the qualifying race to Melbourne or to Sydney, Australia, evoking the growing problems, and especially financial ones, with the New Zealand organizers.
Out of the 16 Challengers declared at the beginning, only 12 have paid the
$ 7 million commitment, but according to the New Zealand Herald, eight amongst
them are having financial difficulties. The Spirit of Hong Kong has withdrawn
last Saturday.

Paul Cayard, skipper of EF Language, the overall leader after six legs of the
1997-98 Whitbread Round The World Race for the Volvo Trophy, has secured
sponsorship for his America's Cup campaign, AmericaOne, from Hewlett-Packard
Company (HP). Hewlett-Packard has been designated as the Official Information
Technology Sponsor of AmericaOne, which becomes the first United States team to
sign a major sponsor.
"Collaborating with HP marks a major milestone in AmericaOne's campaign to beat
the Kiwis in New Zealand in 2000 and bring the race to San Fransisco Bay," said
Cayard, the AmericaOne skipper and CEO. "Technology is a determinant factor in
winning the America's Cup. This is my fifth America's Cup campaign and I know
that the key ingredients for winning are having an early lead in the
development race and creating the fastest boat and the best crew."
Cayard will be returning to Fort Lauderdale next week to continue his Whitbread
campaign. He and his crew have now won three of the six legs and have an
overall points tally of 608, 115 points ahead of the second yacht Swedish Match.
Besides his three first positions, Cayard has also claimed a fifth position, a
fourth position and a second position.
Leg Seven of The Whitbread will set off from Fort Lauderdale on Sunday 19th
April for Baltimore on an 870nm leg which is expected to take up to three days.
The journey will include a 100 nm or so passage up the notoriously challenging
Chesapeake. After a week in Baltimore the fleet will sail to Annapolis on 30th
April from where the start of Leg Eight for La Rochelle will take place on
Sunday 3rd May.

Das Schweizer Syndikat "Fast 2000" hat die besten Chancen, beim America's-Cup im Jahr 2000 in Auckland mit dabei zu sein. Das Syndikat, bei dem auch der Berliner Segler Jochen Schümann als Steuermann unterschrieben hat, wurden von den neuseeländischen Ausrichtern zugelassen. Möglich wurde das auch durch die Verpflichtung eines neuen Co-Sponsors für das Syndikat, das als erste Schweizer Herausforderung so weit gekommen ist: Die Mediterranean Shipping Company 5. A. aus Genf (rund 8000 Mitarbeiter, 200 Schiffe) wird die Truppe der Segellegende Pierre Fehlmann vor allem in der Transport-Logistik mit unterstützen.
Ein Schwerpunkt für das Schweizer Syndikat lag bisher in der Forschung und Entwicklung für den Bau des ersten eigenen Schiffes: Ein Team von 15 Spezialisten unter der Führung des Schweizer Bootskonstrukteurs Sebastian Schmidt bastelt schon seit Monaten an den Entwürfen für das Boot, unterstützt wird die Gruppe auch von dem "Swiss Federal Institut für Technologie" in Lausanne. Nächste Schritte sind jetzt die ersten Tests im Wassertank und im Windkanal, die in den kommenden Wochen begonnen werden sollen.

Ausgebaut wird jetzt der Bereich der Crew-Suche. Ziel ist eine 3oköpfige Basis-Gruppe von Seglern. Dafür wird im Juni eine erste Yacht der "International America's-Cup-Class" am Genfer See stationiert - auf ihr wird das Crew-Searching Programm dann durchgeführt. Danach geht es für das Boot und die neue Crew ins Mittelmeer, wo erste Trainings-Einheiten auf dem Programm stehen. Für den sportlichen Erfolg soll Skipper Jochen Schümann bürgen: Der fünfmalige Soling-Europameister ist schon voll im Training. Mit seinem italienischen Taktiker Tomasso Chieffi gewann er in der Einheitsklasse Corel 45 die KeyWest-Race-Week. "Vor uns liegt noch ein langer Weg, aber ein gutes Stück sind wir schon gemeinsam gegangen," erklärt Syndikats-Chef Pierre Fehlmann.

Es wird ein echtes Jahrtausend-Spektakel, das steht fest. Achtzehn Herausforderer wollen 2000 den Neuseeländern die bodenlose Kanne abjagen, die Dennis Conner 1995 an die Kiwis hatte abgeben müssen. Als eines der interessantesten Syndikate gilt jenes des San Francisco Yachtclub: America True ist Nachfolgerin des legendären Frauenprojekts America3, und die Chefin heißt Dawn Riley, die damit wieder einmal Geschichte schreibt. Niemals zuvor sind die Fäden eines AC-Syndikats in den Händen einer Frau zusammengelaufen. Die Whitbread-Veteranin und A3-Leaderin befehligt diesmal ein gemischtgeschlechtliches Team. Als ein Hauptsponsor konnte Structural Dynamic Research Corporation (SDRC) gewonnen werden, ein internationaler Konzern, der Software für Designautomatisierung vertreibt und Firmen wie Ford, Nissan oder Boeing beliefert. Riley verspricht sich von der Zusammenarbeit mit SDRC einen wichtigen technologischen Vorteil für ihr Syndikat, noch dazu stellte ihr Bill Koch sämtliche A3-Entwicklungs-Daten zur Verfügung. Damit hat America True direkten Zugriff auf die Ergebnisse von fünf harten Arbeitsjahren, die einen geschätzten Wert von rund 60 Millionen Dollar darstellen.
Auf ihrer Gehaltsliste hat Dawn Riley eine Reihe prominenter Mitarbeiter: Strömungstank-Spezialist Richard Whitaker bringt als Konsulent Erfahrung von zwei Cup-Syndikaten mit, ebenso wie Software-Experte Rob Scala, der seit 1992 seine Finger auf der entsprechenden Tastatur hat. Dazu kommen Taktiker David Barnes (seit 1985 bei jedem AC dabei!), Steuermann Jeff Madrigali und Buddy Melges als Berater. Vom Feinsten also.
Zu Trainings- und Sichtungszwecken wird America True in der kommenden Saison auf einer One Design 48 das gesamte Regattaprogramm dieser Klasse bestreiten. Die erste Veranstaltung in Key West beendete die Riley-Truppe mit Madrigali am Rad auf Rang zwei, für die nächste Serie in Miami hat man sich den Sieg vorgenommen.

With major sponsor Bouygues Telecom, the French defenders have launched their operation in due time. The project is bringing together the utmost competence and technologies in the spirit of renewing France's participation. Luc Gellusseau, director of the project, has reunited the members of the Performance Team (Benoît Briand, Nicolas Florin, Albert Jacobsoone and Christian Karcher), as well as the Design Team (Daniel Andrieu, Hervé Devaux, Juan Kouyourndjian, Goulwen Lansonneur, Benrard Nivelt and Jérôme Vedrenne), coordinated by Michel Kermarec, Bertrand Pacé and Philippe Pallu de la Barrière. An America Class must be chosen and ready to sail by July 25, 1999. As for their calendar, a team will be present in Auckland from April 14-26 to participate in the mini America's Cup which will bring together six of the sixteen challengers already engaged. Auckland, - 18 Syndikate aus zehn Nationen fordern die Neuseeländer im Kampf um den America´s Cup 2000 heraus. Das ist ein Melderekord in der über 100jährigen Geschichte dieser Regatta. Deutschland ist erneut nicht am Start. Jedoch wird sein erfolgreichster Segler, Jochen Schümann, für das Schweizer Syndikat "Fast 2000" segeln. In Neuseeland haben sich mittlerweile drei Syndikate gebildet, die um die Ehre kämpfen, die begehrteste Segeltrophäe der Welt im Jahr 2000 zu verteidigen.
